Training

Work in Animal Research requires a three step certification process (Policy #1999-006).

Step 1: Complete the Animal User Orientation Training through the Research Animal Resource Center (RARC)

Step 2: Register for and complete either Safety for Personnel w/ Animal Contact (formerly OH 101) or Agricultural Safety (formerly OH 104). The course you take depends on your job duties.

Step 3: Register for and complete Risk Communication in Animal Facilities.

Step 4: Complete the Animal Contact Risk Questionnaire

This course is required initially and annually for people working with nonhuman primates, nonhuman primate tissues or access to nonhuman primate facilities (Physical Plant staff, contractors, and vendors)

Safety for Personnel w/ Animal Contact

Safety for Personnel with Animal Contact

*Formerly OH 101

Content in this online course offers an introduction to the UW Madison Safety Department and an overview of occupational health and safety topics including animal contact safety, zoonoses, allergies & asthma, ergonomics, medical concerns, immunizations, injury and exposure protocols, syringe use guidelines, and personal protective equipment.

Prerequisite: None

Renewal: Every five years for most modules; Every three years for the Risk Communication in Animal Facilities module

Notes:
This course is one of three requirements for personnel with animal contact.  If you have not already, you will also need to complete the UW Animal User Certification with the Research Animal Resources Center (RARC) and the Animal Contact Risk Questionnaire with UHS Occupational Medicine.

Agricultural Safety is an online course designed for individuals working and learning in agricultural settings.

Renewal: The How to Communicate the Presence of Dangerous Agents in Animal Facilities module needs to be renewed every three years.

Risk Communication in Animal Facilities

Content in this online course is designed for individuals exposing chemicals, biologicals, and radioactive materials to animals in an animal facility and how to properly notify the animal care and veterinary staff.

Renewal: Every three years

Notes:
This course is required for anyone listed on an approved Animal Care and Use Protocol and optional for animal care staff working in animal facilities.

Radiation Safety 105: Radiation Safety for Irradiator Users and Animal Caregivers

Radiation Safety 105

Radiation Safety for Irradiator Users and Animal Caregivers

This on-line course emphasizes the general principles of Radiation Safety for users of radiation producing equipment and animal caregivers. Principle Investigators/Authorized Users will provide additional in-service training. 

Additional training will be provided by the Radiation Safety Office to those who need to use closed beam irradiators or gauges. Please contact Radiation Safety for details.

Training records for the courses Agricultural Safety, Safety for Personnel with Animal Contact and Risk Communication in Animal Facilities in Learn@UW can be obtained using the VCRGE Look Up Tool.

Please Note: Your record may not be visible in the Look Up Tool for up to 10 days after you have completed the course. This data transfer delay is beyond the control of the Animal Research Safety Group and Biosafety Office.

To register and complete a Learn@UW online course, please follow these instructions:     

1. Login to Learn@UW at https://learnuw.wisc.edu with your UW NetID or a visitor login.

2. From the right hand side of your screen, click the dropdown arrow next to Desire2Learn. Select Self-Registration from the list.

3. Select the desired course from the list.

4. After selecting the course, the Description dialog will appear. This screen provides course name and basic information about the course. Press the Register button.

4. On the Registration Form, enter your name and answer the required questions. When finished, click Submit.
