UW-Madison will provide a free blood lead test for children at the Child Development Lab the morning of Thursday, July 27, 2023. This screening will be provided by occupational medicine staff from Environment, Health & Safety.
The test will consist of a fingerstick (also called capillary sampling) to screen blood for lead. Each child’s appointment will take approximately 10 minutes, and parents will need to accompany their child(ren) for this event.
Results are available within approximately one week and will show the level of lead in the blood.
Registration has closed. If you did not register but would like your child screened, please email occupationalmedicine@fpm.wisc.edu.
If you already registered, an occupational medical clinic staff member will call you to set a 10-minute appointment. (If you have multiple children enrolled at CDL that you would like tested, please plan for multiple appointments.)
Please note there are also two forms you need to complete before your appointment. See below.
When: 7:30 -10:30 am, Thursday July 27, by appointment only. Registration is closed. If you did not register but would like your child screened, please email occupationalmedicine@fpm.wisc.edu.
Where: Room 2255, Nancy Nicholas Hall
Don’t forget to complete your forms before your appointment.

How does the test work?
The capillary sampling requires a small amount of blood. A nurse will perform the finger stick procedure on your child’s finger to draw a sample for testing.
Who is eligible to be tested?
This test is for children who are currently enrolled or were enrolled during the 2022-23 school year at the Child Development Lab.
If you would like to pursue lead testing for other members of your family, please consult your primary care practitioner.
How do I register my child(ren)?
Registration is closed. If you did not register but would like your child screened, please email occupationalmedicine@fpm.wisc.edu.
If you already registered to request an appointment, you will receive a call to set up a 10-minute time slot (per child) on the morning of Thursday, July 27.
Please note there are also two forms you need to complete before your appointment. See below.
What happens after the test?
Results are available within approximately one week and will show the level of lead in the blood.
Occupational Medicine staff will contact the parent via their preferred method to relay results and physician guidance.
If a child’s blood test shows an elevated blood lead level, parents will be advised to contact their primary care provider and they will provide family members with information on additional testing recommendations, risk reduction, and nutritional counseling.
Who do I contact with questions?
Please contact occupationalmedicine@fpm.wisc.edu with any questions.
Why is this testing being offered?
Out of an abundance of caution, free on-site blood lead testing is being offered to Child Development Lab children because of water quality issues identified at the CDL.
Water quality testing conducted showed levels of lead above regulatory guidance.
