Reproductive Hazards in Research

Description:

Reproductive Hazards in Research is intended to be a comprehensive course that identifies potential hazards in the research community for women, men, the developing fetus, and children at home. Extensive resources for reproductive hazards in a research setting can be difficult to elucidate, therefore, we hope this course is a valuable resource for potential side effects from exposure to biological, chemical, and radioactive hazards as well as method of prevention. This course also offers resources in the form of guidance documents and publications to identify more detailed and specific information.

Audience

This course is intended for anyone on campus who is a significant other, currently pregnant or considering becoming pregnant.

Performing a Risk Assessment

Description:

It is important that everyone who conducts research knows how to identify the risks of an experiment and develop a plan to reduce those risks. This course covers experimental hazards, the “what if” approach, probabilities, and the hierarchy of controls. Participants in this highly interactive course will choose at least one risk assessment to complete from a given list of procedures. Participants may also choose to submit a risk assessment for an experiment conducted in their own laboratory and receive feedback about it from EH&S.

Audience

Anyone who conducts laboratory or field research

Prerequisite:
None

Compressed Gas Cylinders

Description:

This interactive course covers how to work safely with compressed gas cylinders. Topics include storage, transport, the parts of cylinders and regulators, air monitoring, and the hazards of specific types of gases (e.g. flammable, pyrophoric, corrosive, toxic).

Audience

Anyone who works with or near compressed gas cylinders

Personal Protective Equipment Training

Description:

The Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) training is a basic guide to common laboratory PPE and their uses.  This training will cover general recommendations for appropriate PPE, where to find lab procedure specific PPE requirements, when PPE should and should not be used, and knowing the different types of PPE and the hazards they protect against.  Since this is not a complete guide to all PPE used on hazards in your specific laboratory this training will help guide you to resources to make the right decision of your particular laboratory hazards.  After this training; you will have a better understanding of how to choose and use PPE, where to go to get information if you are unsure about PPE, and what hazards PPE will and will not protect against.

This training will is available for all UW-Madison employees.

Audience

Anyone interested in learning more about PPE
