Workspace Checklist

The following checklist is designed to help you determine if your workspace is arranged per general ergonomic recommendations. These recommendations are for the standard, seated workspace and may vary for each individual. If you respond ‘No’ to any of the items, please review the quick, self-guided resource, Ergonomics: A Guide to Setting Up Your Computer Workstation, to address the respective items.

1. Is your chair adjustable?
2. Is your back fully supported by a backrest?
3. Are your knees at or slightly below hip level at a 90-110 degree angle when sitting?
4. Does your seat depth allow 1-2 inches of space between the edge of your seat and the back of your knees or calves?
5. Does the width of your seat pan fit and support your legs completely?
6. Are your feet flat on the floor or supported by a footrest?
7. Are your elbows resting directly below your shoulders at your sides and close to your body when typing?
8. Are your wrists at or slightly below elbow height with your elbows bent at around a 90-degree angle when typing?
9. Are your wrists neutral and straight from top and side views?
10. Are your wrists and arms free from contact against sharp edges?
11. Do you have adequate legroom under your desk?
12. Is the monitor approximately 18-30 inches from your eyes? Note: You may need to move larger monitors farther away.
13. Is the top of the monitor (including your laptop screen) at or slightly below your eye level? Note: If you wear bifocals or trifocals, you may need to lower the monitor more.
14. Is your primary monitor directly in front of you?
15. Is the screen positioned to minimize glare and reflections from overhead lights, windows and other light sources?
16. Is your head upright with your ears aligned above your shoulders?
17. Is the screen's brightness and contrast adjusted for your optimal viewing?
18. Are your shoulders relaxed down and back (in line with your trunk)?
19. Is the mouse positioned close to the keyboard and at the same level?
20. Do you use a headset or speakerphone if you use the phone frequently?
21. Are your frequently used items positioned close to you?
22. Do you periodically change positions (e.g. stand, move around, and/or stretch)?
