ABSL-2 research training requirements for animal care & veterinary staff

If your lab engages in ABSL-2 research and houses animals in a vivarium or other dedicated animal housing space, you are required to provide training to animal care and veterinary staff annually, and whenever a new research project begins.

This training must cover:

  • Risks and hazards associated with your research project
  • Personal protective equipment (PPE) required when working with agents and animals

These requirements are in accordance with the Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories (BMBL) guidelines.

The Animal Research Safety team is here to help! We have created a helpful training checklist and a PowerPoint template to support your training efforts. The training materials are easy to use, customizable and designed to meet the BMBL guidelines.

Please contact us at animalsafety@fpm.wisc.edu to request the materials.
