The Biosafety Cabinet Replacement Program is a program that helps labs purchase new BSCs at a discount of 60% off the price on a ‘first come-first serve’ basis for BSCs that are 15 years of age or older.
Since 2016, the program has replaced 200 BSCs across the UW-Madison campus. With $250,000 of campus funding set aside for the replacement of more BSCs, 25 cabinets have been purchased.

Background
The BSC replacement initiative started in fiscal year of 2016 to offer a replacement program for aging biological safety cabinet (BSC) equipment on the UW-Madison Campus. From that original program we were able to replace about two hundred old BSCs. We are pleased to announce that campus administration is providing more funding for the purchase of BSCs for the replacement program.
UW-Madison has more than 1,800 BSCs and 425 are more than 20 years old. According to NSF/ANSI 49 standards, UW specifications and manufacturer recommendations call for BSC replacement every 15 years. Manufacturer rebates for replacing BSC that are 15 years-old or older are included in the purchase price.
The serial numbers of replaced BSC must be reported back to Baker Company, Inc. to satisfy procurement contract specifications.
